About Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts is an academic division within the University of New Brunswick, located in Fredericton and Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. As one of the founding academic faculties of the university, which traces its origins back to 1785, the Faculty of Arts delivers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate education in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. The primary campus in Fredericton sits along the Saint John River, while the Saint John campus serves the province's largest economic center. Both campuses operate under the overall institutional governance of the University of New Brunswick, offering degree programs accredited through provincial legislative authority and recognized by Universities Canada.

Academic structures within the Faculty of Arts encompass a broad range of departments and interdisciplinary programs. Key departments include English, History, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Philosophy, Classics, and Anthropology. Students can pursue Bachelor of Arts degrees, Bachelor of Applied Arts degrees, Master of Arts degrees, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in selected disciplines such as History and Psychology. The faculty also administers specialized certificate and diploma programs in areas such as Applied Health Services Research, Ethics, and Public Policy. Programs are designed to provide foundational instruction in critical thinking, qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, written communication, and historical analysis.

The faculty maintains specific academic strengths in regional historical studies, applied psychology, maritime literature, and social policy research. Its research centers and institutes contribute to scholarly work in areas such as Atlantic Canada studies, military history, and health research. The Department of Psychology offers specialized clinical training programs that integrate theoretical instruction with supervised practical experience. Additionally, interdisciplinary options allow students to combine arts disciplines with courses from business, science, or computer science, accommodating diverse educational and career objectives.

Facilities supporting the Faculty of Arts are distributed across the Fredericton and Saint John campuses. Academic buildings house lecture halls, seminar rooms, faculty offices, and specialized research laboratories, particularly for psychology and cognitive science studies. Students have access to the main university library system, including the Harriet Irving Library in Fredericton and the Hans W. Klohn Commons in Saint John. These facilities provide physical and digital collections, archives containing regional historical documents, quiet study spaces, and collaborative technology suites tailored for humanities and social sciences research.

Admission to the Faculty of Arts is governed by standard University of New Brunswick entrance requirements, which evaluate secondary school academic performance, language proficiency, and specific prerequisite coursework. The academic calendar is structured into fall, winter, and summer terms, offering full-time and part-time study options. The faculty supports experiential learning through co-operative education streams, internships, study abroad exchanges, and undergraduate research assistantships, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical, professional, and international contexts.
